A well-designed lighting system transforms an ordinary swimming pool into a unique art object and the centerpiece of a landscape design or spa interior. However, beyond its visual appeal, lighting serves a critical safety function, allowing for monitoring of the water at night. The modern water equipment market offers a variety of solutions: from classic soft halogen lighting to dynamic LED scenarios. If you're planning to purchase equipment for your water area, it's important to understand that water is an aggressive environment, requiring specialized equipment with a high protection rating.

The engineering complexity of lighting installations lies not only in ensuring the housing is hermetically sealed but also in adhering to strict electrical safety standards. Unlike streetlights, underwater floodlights operate in direct contact with people. Therefore, the industry standard is the use of low-voltage equipment, which requires careful calculation of the entire electrical circuit, including step-down transformers and cable runs.

Light Source Types: Halogen vs. LED

When designing lighting, the first step is to determine the lamp type. This is a fundamental decision that will impact energy consumption, maintenance frequency, and color control capabilities. Currently, there are two main technologies, each with its own operating characteristics.

1. Halogen spotlights

This is a classic hydrotechnical lighting solution, proven for decades. The light source is an incandescent lamp with a halogen gas. The main advantage of these fixtures is their high color rendering index and a pleasant, warm spectrum of light, which gives the water a natural azure hue. Furthermore, the price of the spotlight itself is usually lower than its LED counterparts. However, it's worth considering the technical nuances:

  • High energy consumption (a standard lamp consumes 300 W).
  • Strong heating of the housing (the spotlight should always be kept under water for cooling).
  • Relatively short lamp life (requires periodic replacement)

2. LED floodlights

A modern standard increasingly favored by customers seeking a durable system with installation. LEDs consume 10-15 times less energy with comparable luminous flux. Their main advantage is the ability to use RGB matrices, which allow the water color to change as desired, creating dynamic light shows. Key technical advantages:

  • The service life of the diodes reaches 50,000 hours.
  • Possibility to select the glow temperature (cold white, warm white, multi-color RGB).
  • Minimum load on the home's electrical network.

Design features and installation

The choice of light housing directly depends on the type of pool basin. You can't install the same fixture in a tiled concrete basin and in one lined with a PVC liner. Sealing is key to preventing leaks and short circuits.

The following types of installation are distinguished:

  1. Recessed (embedded) spotlights.Installed during pool construction. The housing (niche) is concreted into the pool's edge, and the optical section is housed within. For liner pools, these models are equipped with clamping flanges and EPDM rubber seals.
  2. Surface-mounted (flat) lights.An ideal solution for renovating existing pools or for installation in composite and polypropylene pools where a deep recess is not possible. They are mounted directly to the wall and have minimal thickness.
  3. Wall-mounted models.An option for prefabricated frame or permanently installed pools, where the waterproofing integrity cannot be compromised. The unit is simply hung on the side.

The front panel is most often made of impact-resistant ABS plastic (resistant to chemicals and UV rays) or polished AISI 304/316 stainless steel. Steel models have a more premium appearance and complement other equipment (stairs, waterfalls), making them a popular choice for design projects.

PAR56 LED lamps

The ability to retrofit older pools is also worth mentioning. The PAR56 standard is a universal size for most pool niches from global manufacturers. This means that if you already have an old, energy-consuming halogen spotlight, you can simply purchase an LED lamp of this format and replace it without dismantling the entire housing. This will significantly reduce electricity costs and add color-changing functionality without the need for construction work.
